Kinds of Lies
Lies come in different colors, each with distinct implications.
Black lies, as one patient named Ernest described, create "a kind of hiding place in your life, like a secret room" where deliberate deceptions can be stored, invisible to others.
White lies serve as social lubricant—the small untruths we tell to maintain harmony in our relationships.
Between these extremes lie the gray lies, which can be identified by asking two questions: Could someone blackmail you with this information? And are you following the Golden Rule? If your deception fails either test, you've wandered into the gray zone.
Understanding these distinctions helps us recognize the varying weights our untruths carry.
