Prison of Two Ideas
#friction #incentives
Greg Gutfeld describes our tendency to view issues through a binary lens as "the Prison of Two Ideas." We instinctively categorize proposals as good or bad, workable or doomed—yes or no.
But reality is messier.
Most problems aren't solved completely; they're nudged in better directions through carefully applied friction (penalties) and incentives. Rather than asking if a plan will work, consider how friction and incentives might shift behaviors in the desired direction. The effectiveness of these forces can only be determined through testing.
By abandoning the yes-no framework in our political, personal, and business decisions, we free ourselves to pursue more nuanced, realistic solutions to complex problems.
