At Western Electric's Hawthorne plant, researchers discovered something unexpected while trying to improve worker productivity. They painted walls, adjusted lighting, and made various environmental changes—each time, productivity increased. Then, suspiciously, when they secretly reverted conditions back to the original state, productivity rose again.
What they had stumbled upon, now called the "Hawthorne effect," reveals a fundamental truth about human behavior: people respond positively to the mere perception of being cared about. "It appears that when you show you care, the person on the other end responds more favorably than if you appear not to care," as researchers concluded. This phenomenon extends beyond factory floors—in education, both students and professors perform better when they believe a new teaching method is being implemented.
